books i didn't expect to love

even when books come highly recommended to me, i am wary that i'll actually like them. in fact, the MORE recommended they are, the more -__- i am about them. which totally isn't fair and i know that but it's how i roll and it's just something the world has to deal with.

most recently i went to go see Thor. the previews looked awful, but the hubs and i kept hearing good things. so we gave it a go. and despite hearing that it was good, i just could not convince myself that it was going to be good. but you know what? it TOTALLY was. like, i really enjoyed it and it was actually a really thoughtful movie and a solid balance of the fantasy world and our world. anyway, the point is i was not expecting to love this movie, yet i did.

which got me thinking, there are a handful of books that i was not expecting to love but totally captured my heart.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
the internet went NUTS over this book. and with each new review that was ^_^ i was more -_-. but you know what, i gave it a try. and i fell in love too. i connected with Sam's voice and i loved that she was a flawed character searching for redemption. worth the hype, for sure.

Clarity by Kim Harrington
basically, the same reasons as Before I Fall, but throw in my total paranormal overload in the mix. i was so sick of the paranormal formula and could not give this book my time. but this was much more of a mystery than a paranormal for me, which was an awesomely pleasant surprise.

Generation Dead by Daniel Waters
i was all, 'whatever, zombies are supposed to be scary' etc and put this book off for a long time. i was blind to the fact that zombies/differently biotic could represent some sweet social commentary and present some moral and ethical issues for me to ponder. and,  you know, it's a pretty amazing story. love you Adam!

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr
as with zombies, i was all 'whatever, faeries are lame'. and you know what, i typically still don't like faerie books but when they are this GOOD and this Well Written, it's impossible not to fall in love. you guys, i will never ever forget her vivid imagery and the atmosphere Marr creates with her writing style.

are there any books that you were not expecting to love, but totally captured your heart?

Lisa is a gamer, crafter, fangirl, mother, wife and unabashed nerd who is pretty ridiculous and it's best you know that up front. When she's not binge watching Netflix or crafting into the wee hours of the night, you can find her spending a lot of her time on Pinterest and Twitter.
