Here's a look at two books I have sitting in my To Be Read pile. I don't necessarily own these books, but they are books I want to read in the not too distant future.
It just so happens that my two picks this week are both contemporary reads. I'm typically a dragons and swords and magic and super hero type of reader, but I've been known to enjoy a good contemporary read here and there!
Band Geek Love by Josie Bloss
July 2008, Flux
All band, all the time. That's how trumpet goddess Ellie Snow has made it to senior year. No drama, no dating. Just keeping lock-step within the safe precision of the Winslow Marching Band. She's a fierce section leader now, and so over the heart-crushing social disaster of her freshman year. No boy is going to ruin Ellie's shining moment-her senior solo performance at the homecoming game.
And then Connor Higgins shows up. Not even Ellie can resist the trumpet player who could be a model for Abercrombie & Fitch. It's a hook-up made in band-geek heaven But Ellie's not ready to publicize their romance, not even to her best friends. After all, Connor's just a sophomore. What would everyone say? Breaking formation and revealing her true self would be like . . . marching on the field completely naked
Then Ellie discovers the flipside of secrets and how it feels to be shut out by the ones she loves. [Summary from Goodreads.]
Why I want to read this: As a former band geek myself, the title totally invited me in. However, there sounds like some good drama in here and plenty of cute boy action to boot - WIN.
September 2006, Dial Books
In this thought-provoking exploration of self-reliance and the nature of evil, a young boy sees that he needs to take action to save his family from his unpredictable mother. [Summary from Goodreads]
Why I want to read this: This leaves SO MUCH to the imagination. I've read some good reviews and that's enough to pique my interest. It sounds like it could be a tad heavy, but hopefully worthwhile!
Have you read either of these? If so, what did you think?
I am intrigued by Band Geek Love. Why have I never heard of this one?! You will need to tell me if it's something I need to read, too :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. I LOVE your new lay-out, like seriously.
Thanks, G! I'll keep you posted on Band Geek Love fo sho.
DeleteAnd just like that, I added two more book sto my TBR pile. Do you think it's going to start yelling at me soon? :)
ReplyDeleteI was also a band geek. But a majorette. I didn't play an instrument. GO BAND!
I have Band Geek Love in my LMC but haven't gotten around to it. My students really like it :)
ReplyDeleteI've heard of The Rules of Survival. It's definitely something I want to attempt to read!

I read Rules of Survival a few years ago. It's a difficult book to read because of what those kids go through, and I think about it almost every day when interacting with my kids at school. I think about what is going on at home. I'll be interested to hear your take on it!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of the Band Geek Love book, but I was also a former band geek (baritone player!) so I'm going to check it out.
Good to know. Thanks! :)
DeleteBand Geek Love FTW! I've never heard of it but it sounds fun! I was a clarinet player myself so I'm excited for that. Alas there were no Abercrombie models in my band, so hopefully this Connor can make up for it.
ReplyDeleteSide note: I LOVE the new layout. Love it. :-)
Thanks, Amy! Band geeks forevah! YEAH WOODWINDS.
DeleteI forgot your blog is all different! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd Band Geek Love has been added to my TBR! And so has The Rules of Survival!
