Top Ten Tuesday: To Read or Not To Read

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the fly honeys at The Broke and The Bookish

Oh yes. This resonates with my soul these days because I've picked up a few books that I was like THIS WILL BE LOVE and it wasn't love and then my heart was broken. I'm so afraid to love again. Will every book break my heart and my spirit? Forever? Help me decide! VOTE PLZ.

I started this series WAY back when. I liked it a lot, but it was a bit absurd. Like a cheesy horror movie that you love, you know? But I don't know if it's worth pursuing the series. HALP.

I tried to read this years ago. Yes, years. I can't tell if I didn't like it or if I just wasn't in the mood for it. It came recommended from someone I very much respect, but haven't found a lot of people who've read it. So either it's a hidden gem or...not.

I thought The Golden Compass was okay. I wanted to love it, but it was lukewarm at best. I mean, fantasy is MY JAM so I want to be head over heels for this. Will it get better as I read on?

I was super excited about this one at first, but the longer it sits on my shelf, the more I'm like mehhhhhh.

LOVED the first one. Was 50/50 on the second one. Does it wrap up well?

I haven't heard a lot about this series from the blogosphere at large, but I know some people are very loyal to it. Is it a Lisa book?

This is another one of those series people seem to LOVE or feel meh about. Where will I fall?

The cover is honestly what keeps me from reading this one. I know. I'm the worst.

Mixed reviews on this series in general! Worth a binge read?

This has ALL the elements of a book I should love, but people seem to NOT love it. Will I?

THANK YOU for your help!

Lisa is a gamer, crafter, fangirl, mother, wife and unabashed nerd who is pretty ridiculous and it's best you know that up front. When she's not binge watching Netflix or crafting into the wee hours of the night, you can find her spending a lot of her time on Pinterest and Twitter.

  1. THE SUBTLE KNIFE. THE. SUBTLE. KNIFE. (Granted I read that series when I was like 12, but I have so many hearts for it. I want to do a re-read ASAP to see if it holds up. You should read with me.)

The Beginning of Everything - I liked it but it was too overly polished for me. Very nerdy though. You might like it for that.

Across the Universe - I gave up on the idea of reading this series A WHILE ago. But if you like it I'd reconsider.

Cadet of Tildor - I WANT to read this.

Defiance - Mmmm I was eh on this. Is it fantasy, is it dystopia, is it post-apocalyptic? Too many genre feels competing in one book that's mostly about a girl hateloving a boy.

    1. Okay okay okay, if 12 year old Gaby loved it then surely I will love it!

YES. That is the problem with TBoE. I feel like I will like some and not all and will it be enough?

      lollll at your Selection reaction.

  2. I would definitely say skip Across the Universe. I finally DNFed halfway through the sequel - but it's just so boring and the characters have ZERO personality. The romance is BLECH. And I dunno. The sparse sci-fi elements were all right, but I just couldn't bring myself to care at all.

    1. So it's basically "set" in space and not necessarily embracing the space theme?

  3. Across the Universe - READ IT. The entire series was pretty awesome, I thought. I loved it a lot.

The Selection Series - not sure what to tell you on this one. I found the series incredibly frustrating. The main characters do wicked stupid things quite frequently. But the end was pretty amazingly awesome. So...

    1. That's what I hear about The Selection too - but some people seem to LOVE it. I dunno!

  4. The only one I have an opinion on (and I know this is going to be unpopular) is The Selection - do not read it. Great twist on the topic!

    Here are my Top Ten!

    1. Not too unpopular with these comments, it seems! Ha!

  5. Oh my gosh Lisa PLEASEEEE read The Subtle Knife (imagine me kneeling on the ground begging) I promise the story gets better. My personal favorite out of the entire series is The Amber Spyglass (the final book), and I know you love fantasy, so I just really think you should give it a try. Like, I will push this series on you until the day I die. And it's ok if you hate it, but I can't imagine you not.

  6. I actually read the Selection and I didn't hate it. I know there was some drama with the author and whatnot but I chose to ignore that for the sake of the book itself. It certainly borrows ideas form other books I think (but really, what book doesn't?). For me it was a book that I felt like I probably shouldn't enjoy so much, but I did anyway. Ha! I have not read the rest of the series though. I read and enjoyed AtU but I haven't finished that series either!

  7. I really liked The Selection trilogy, it wasn't packed with action at all but I really liked some of the characters and yes I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed the storyline too. Funny, because this trilogy doesn't seem like my cup of tea mainly because I despise love triangles but it still is one of my favorite books. :))

  8. Eh. I feel like there are better books out there than all of there.

  9. First of all, I adore your graphics, Lisa! Second, here are my votes on the ones I've read:
The Beginning of Everything - READ <3
    Across the Universe - SKIP!
The Selection - It was a okay mindless read...

  10. I really liked the whole His Dark Materials series, and actually got a pretty bad sunburn because I was so engrossed in The Subtle Knife that I forgot to reapply sunscreen -- whoops!

Across the Universe made my list this week too. I already own the first book, so I feel like I should give it a try? But then I pick something else off the shelf instead :P

  11. I liked Eve, but after that the story goes downhill pretty fast.. The last book was horrible. I would use your time to read something better!

Hey you! What do you have to say?
